LIZ'S STORY

I was the Year 1 Leader running the Architectural Design Studio at the University of Nottingham (2004-22). I joined as a Lecturer and was promoted to Associate Professor. Alongside leading Year 1, I taught across Years 2 and 3 of the undergraduate programme. After returning from my travels in 2023, I resumed teaching as a studio tutor (2023-24). I now visit Nottingham as an external reviewer.

As Head of Year 1, I worked closely with students at a critical point in their studies, supporting them through the transition from school to university. Over 18 years I taught more than 3,600 students and oversaw a studio of 150 to 180 students each year, working with a team of around 35 staff. That experience gave me deep insight into both the rewards and the challenges of studying architecture - academically, creatively, and personally.

That insight now informs the work I do beyond the university. I help students considering architecture, or preparing to begin their degree, understand what the course actually involves - so they can decide with clarity whether it is right for them, and arrive ready if it is.

Guiding Students Through Their Architectural Journey

Experience, clarity, and support at every stage

After graduating with a degree and master’s in Architecture from Kingston University, I began my career working in the architecture and design field. It was during this time that I realised my real passion lay in teaching and supporting students as they learned how to think, design, and communicate as architects.

I went on to spend 20 years (2004–2024) at the University of Nottingham, where I ran the Year 1 Architectural Design Studio and taught across the undergraduate programme. As Head of Year 1 and Associate Professor, I was responsible not only for academic standards, but also for supporting students through the often challenging transition from school to university-level architectural study. Over this time, I gained deep insight into both the rewards and the pressures of studying architecture.

My work now focuses on helping students who are considering architecture - or preparing to begin their degree - gain clarity, confidence, and a realistic understanding of what lies ahead. This led to the creation of the 7-Day Insider’s Guide to Studying Architecture, a course designed to help students decide whether architecture is the right fit for them, and to assist them in building confidence, understanding, and preparedness ahead of starting an architecture degree.

Alongside the course, I offer one-to-one architectural tutorials for students and graduates, including portfolio guidance, design development, and drawing support ahead of starting university. I also continue to work as an architectural designer, allowing me to combine academic insight with current practice.

For many students, the Insider’s Guide is just the beginning. As their studies progress, they have the option to return for individual tutorials and tailored support, enabling me to continue guiding them as their understanding, skills, and confidence develop.

LIZ'S INTERESTS

I love teaching architecture because it allows me to explore, alongside my students, how design shapes people, places, and ideas about the world. My work focuses on architectural design and on communicating ideas clearly through visual means.

My areas of interest and expertise include drawing, photography, art, and graphic design — all essential tools for developing and expressing architectural thinking.

Outside of teaching, I enjoy travelling to experience inspiring buildings, beautiful places, and local cultures first-hand.

Throughout the 7-Day Insider’s Guide to Studying Architecture, I share drawings, photographs, and insights from my own work and travels, helping students see how architectural ideas are shaped by real places and lived experience.
